About Jennie Baker

Jennie Baker is a freelance photographer based in Portland, Oregon. She specializes in informal portraiture (human and animal) and event photography, although she constantly experiments with other styles of work.

“Two years ago, I picked up a camera in order to escape. I found a world of my own, and I've been living there ever since. The more I shoot, the more I know.”

Artist Statement
I remember going to concerts when I was a kid. As the music poured out, I stared at the stage, mesmerized by flashing lights, brilliant colors, and the most amazing people I’d ever seen. I’ve always thought musicians were beautiful. I'm jealous of them; I want to be up there with them. I am utterly fascinated by the way they move. My goal with this series has been to catch the energy of the performers and make it a visual art. I leaned on things, climbed on things, stepped over things, hid under things, and even dodged a few things, to get the images I wanted. All photographs were taken in Portland venues, and many of the bands are local artists.
