When Apple released the original iPhone, it changed the cellphone game—instantly and forever. Changes in the camera industry don’t happen quite that dramatically (although you could say the iPhone had as large an effect on cameras as it did on phones). Mirrorless cameras have slowly evolved over the past several years, culminating now in a plethora of options in several different formats. And now, there may finally be reason for even the diehard professional DSLR shooters to consider switching to mirrorless. I recently had the opportunity to take Sony’s A7 mirrorless full-frame camera out for a spin, and while I can’t say it’s as revolutionary as the iPhone, it has definitely made an impression.
