As much as we love shiny new toys, we also appreciate the importance of truly giving during the holiday season. But nothing says you can’t give a great gift and give back to your community at the same time. Here is a list of some local organizations that we have been fortunate enough to work with, all of which offer memberships that not only make great gifts, but also go directly to supporting our local environment, economy, and creative community.
Portland Art Museum
Membership in the Portland Art Museum offers an exceptional value, with free exhibitions, store discounts, and more depending on the level of membership. PAM supports the photography community not just through exhibitions, but also by hosting the Brown Bag Lectures, a biweekly series of presentations by photographers, for photographers.
Newspace Center for Photography
Newspace is Portland’s premier photographic educational resource, offering classes for both youth and adults on a variety of topics, from traditional dark room processing through digital photography and advanced studio lighting. Their gallery space is also one of the best in town. Memberships offer a variety of perks depending on the level, including discounts to their workshops, free exhibitions, and more.
Northwest Documentary is the area’s leading resources for documentary film education. Offering classes and equipment rentals, they aim to assist the aspiring filmmaker in telling his or her story. Many local legends, including Portland Film Festival founder, Josh Leake, and Uncage the Soul Productions frontman, John Waller, got their start in NW Documentary classes. Buy a membership for the filmmaking student in your life and they will receive skills they can take with them forever.
Outdoor Project is the best way to find and plan your next adventure. Started in Portland, they have expanded to include the Pacific NW and beyond and are continuing to grow. To provide inspiration to its members, photography and video are central to what Outdoor Project does. Memberships are available at different levels, and you can even become a contributor for additional perks and the chance to show off your adventures to the world.
No organization works harder to protect our natural resources in Oregon than Oregon Wild. Memberships first and foremost help ensure that they get to continue doing this work, but they also provide exclusive benefits like free workshops, guided excursions, and chances to get involved. Oregon Wild recognizes the power of photography and video in telling the stories of these places that cannot speak for themselves. For any outdoor photo enthusiast, this would make a perfect gift.
