Picture The Wild

Showcasing the wildlands, wildlife, and waters that make Oregon a special place. The submission deadline for 2016 ends September 16, 2016.

For over a decade, the Oregon Wild Outdoor Photo Contest has been a platform for stunning portraits of our state. Amateur and professional photographers alike have submitted incredible images of the mountainscapes, rivers, and elusive creatures that, for many of us, define our home. Many of those features and creatures are found in Oregon’s increasingly threatened public lands, so in 2016, we’re sharpening our focus on these special places. Send us images of the Oregon you love and — like our public lands — think should be shared: an Oregon for all.

Photographers of all ages and abilities can enter photos in the 12th annual Outdoor Photo Contest’s four main categories (see below). By capturing and sharing what you love about Oregon as only a nature photographer can, you’ll help us keep our public lands in the public view.

An entry fee of just $5 enables you to submit up to five total photos to any of the four main categories, and enters you into the chance to win exciting prizes from our outstanding sponsors. Plus, your images might just be featured in our newsletter or in other publications to help inspire others to protect Oregon’s special places!

Categories

Wildlands – Photos must be of federal public lands in Oregon. This includes National Forest and BLM lands (including designated Wilderness and National Scenic areas), National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, National Grasslands, and National Monuments.  Images featuring recreation are acceptable and encouraged.  Photos from state and local public lands, or private lands, are not eligible.

Wildlife – Photos must be of native Oregon species in their natural habitat. This category includes fish.

Water – Photos must be of pristine, undeveloped waterways in Oregon. This includes rivers, lakes, streams, waterfalls and wetlands. Images featuring recreation are acceptable and encouraged.

Endangered Places – Take Refuge. Photos should be of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Although the armed militants at Malheur NWR finally stood down this February after a 41-day occupation, attacks on our public lands continue behind the scenes. By capturing and sharing what you love about Malheur as only a nature photographer can do, you can help us increase the exposure on a continuing problem and keep our public lands in the public view.

For all submissions:

Before you send in your images, please review the contest Rules and Submission Guidelines for complete details, including an explanation of the categories. All submissions must be accompanied by a completed entry form.

Finalists are announced after an initial round of judging in September. Oregon Wild supporters will vote online for the grand prize winners in each category. We will announce the winners at our annual benefit, Call of the Wild, to be held in Portland on the night of October 14, 2016.

Please note: The Oregon Wild staff work tirelessly to protect the wildlands, wildlife, and waters that are the focus of this contest. We are unable to take phone calls regarding this contest and urge you to utilize the maps, detailed submission guidelines, and additional resources provided on our website to the best of your ability. Thank you for understanding, and best of luck!
