Global Press Institute (GPI) is one of the most exciting organizations we have had the opportunity to partner with in recent time. Founded by journalist Cristi Hegranes, GPI seeks to empower women in the developing world with training in journalism so that they can become the voice of their communities, telling stories often overlooked by foreign correspondents working for the established media outlets. While the organization is still relatively new, it has grown incredibly quickly, spanning 25 countries around the globe. The stories told by GPI reporters have been picked up by the BBC, NPR, and Huffington Post. As the organization continues to grow, so too must it continuously raise the bar for its content. Portland-based photographer Paige Stoyer, through a chance meeting with Cristi Hegrenes in Rwanda, has now begun to bring photojournalism training to GPI’s news desks, as well, so that the journalists can tell visual stories along with the written ones. To help support this endeavor, Pro Photo Supply outfitted GPI’s Cameroon news desk with cameras and accessories. We are extremely thankful to be a part of such an amazing movement, and we know that other people will want to support GPI, as well. Please join Paige Stoyer and Cristi Hegrenes tomorrow evening (5/29) at Newspace Center for Photography to learn more about GPI and to see how you can get involved. You can register for the free event here.
